On-call and escalation
An alert at night should wake one person on call, not the whole team. And it must not get lost if that person does not respond.
The task
When notifications go to everyone, people stop reading them. When they go to one person, there is a risk that person will not respond.
How it is solved
A schedule sets the rotation, shift length and time zone, and overrides are taken into account. An escalation policy describes the steps: whom to notify and how long to wait for acknowledgment before the next step. People on call see their shifts in their own calendar via an iCal link.
What is included
- Rotation, shift length and time zone
- Overrides for specific dates
- Monthly shift calendar
- iCal link for the on-call person’s calendar
- Escalation steps with a wait between them
- An escalation step can point to an on-call schedule
Limitations
- Schedule members are defined by notification channels.
- Holidays and shift swaps are not supported yet: use overrides.
